The Nurture Run 2014

Yes! I made it. I also thought I couldn't, thanks to my antoking kumare who woke up early to go with me.

The original plan was, Ace will come with me since he's been dying to climb again and running will be a sound alternative. But came his new job that needed him to work until Sunday, the plan was altered.

Kumare has been jogging around UP every Sunday so, I thought she will be a perfect company.



The hard part was going to CCP. I'm not gala so there are places I don't know how to go via commute. Google was the perfect answer, but we still got lost. Hahaha that's how smart I am.

We arrived at CCP around 7AM already. We were eager to run but we got lost again. Hahaha. I think we ran the 3K trail. I know. Stupid. Haha.

We were able to attend the awarding. The HIZON family was there together with Izza the founder of BBB.

Nurture Run 2014: #LetsBeReal, Filipina Mothers

We've all been told that breastfeeding’s best for babies; but why are less than half of Filipina mothers opting for exclusive breastfeeding?

Reality bites, and in fact, recent figures released by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI-DOST) say that breastfeeding rates are at 47 percent and more alarmingly, there are actually areas in the country that have breastfeeding rates of only 27 percent. That’s 7 out of 10 mothers who opt for infant formulas and other artificial milk substitutes.

Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding together with UNICEF are looking to shift this mindset. “Filipina mothers aren’t keeping it real and we want to help change that,” says Iza Abeja, Executive Director of Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding.

In keeping with the thrust to promote, support and protect the rights of the breastfeeding mother and child, BBB is organizing the Nurture Run, one of the biggest breastfeeding awareness initiatives in the country to date. More than 10,000 runners and breastfeeding advocates are expected to join Nurture Run.

Iza also shares that proceeds of the Nurture Run will go to mobilizing skilled counselors, sustaining mommy groups and organizing breastfeeding awareness activities as well as supporting Milk Banks through Milk Letting Days.“All these initiatives will be carried out in strategic areas in the country specifically in disaster prone provinces,” notes Iza. “As the recent disasters in Tacloban, Bohol and Zamboanga have taught us, breastmilk can save lives.”

The Nurture Run is set oriinally on April 13, 2014 Sunday but was reschuled on May 18, 2014 from 5:30 am to 10:00 am at the Quezon Memorial Circle.  It covers 3km and 5km options with race kits costing PHP 450.00 inclusive of the race bib and Nurture Run shirt. The event is co-presented by UNICEF, International Labour Organization (ILO), National Nutrition Cluster group for Haiyan/Yolanda and Department of Health (DOH) in coordination with venue-host the Quezon City Government.

Nurture Run 2014 Media Launch

Last 20th of March 2014 I had been a part of the Nurture Run 2014's media launch. It was organized by Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding together with UNICEF. It was held at Recess by Chef Chris in Jupiter St. Makati City. I was one of the lucky bloggers who went to the event. I've learned a lot about the benefits of breastfeeding and honestly speaking, most of the information that I heard are new to me. I nursed my son for only three months and I regret that I did not keep it. There are several reasons, but after the event, I understood those reasons are not enough to not to provide my son the right nutrition that he deserves.

I have jotted down of what I picked from the speakers of that event.

• Breastfeeding is not something to prepare - No cash needed. It's the practical choice for providing babies with proper nutrition.
• It can protect the baby from allergies
• It connects child and mother - Love and care, eye contact
• Minimize the risk of obesity
• Improves intellectual capacity
• Lower the risk of SID (Sudden Infant Death)
• It reduce mother's risk of postpartum depression
